MATH‐BASED DATA STRUCTURES AND ANALYSIS FOR MISSION ENGINEERING

The future of systems engineering (FuSE) calls for increased rigor, grounded in math‐based approaches.

Abstract

The future of systems engineering (FuSE) calls for increased rigor, grounded in math‐based approaches. A systematic literature review published this past year found math‐based approaches to systems engineering to be nascent. The review pointed to a notable, systems theory‐based approach referred to as the discrete event system specification (DEVS). While there have been inclinations toward folding DEVS into systems engineering approaches, such as model‐based systems engineering (MBSE), the work has yet to gain notable thrust. The work presented in this article brings DEVS into the current systems engineering transformation by introducing the approach to mission engineering and digital engineering. The contribution is a DEVS‐grounded ontology and graph‐based workflow that links mission measures of effectiveness, design parameters, and executable analysis, demonstrating progress toward the interoperability and reuse outcomes of the digital transformation.
